The Canine Hereditary Cancer Consortium, part of the Van Andel Research Institute located in Grand Rapids, MI, will be collecting swab samples at the Greyt Hounds, Great Lakes, Great Wine canine cancer fund raiser to be held August 13, 2011. The CHCCi s an alliance of researchers, physicians, veterinarians and dog owners. Working together under a federally funded grant from the NIH/National Cancer Insittute, the CHCC will first target biochemical causes of disease and learn how the DNA of dogs affected with cancer varies from those who are not.

If you pet will be having surgery to remove a tumor, we will send a collection kit. If your dog has already had a tumor removed and has a conclusive diagnoisis, a blood sample will enable us to study their DNA. Samples can also be collected following euthanasia, if your pet has a surgically untreatable tumor. The euthanasia solution does not affect the DNA of the dog or the cancer cells.
